In one of the more unusual launches out there, KEF introduced a speaker that doesn’t exist yet. They’ve even created a brochure for and launched a website. They are calling the “Blade” and it is the result of a three-year research project taken on by the company’s engineers in Maidston, Kent in the UK.
The speakers are based on Single Apparent Source technology. This works by symmetrically positioning side firing bass units around the companies Uni-Q driver. KEF says that this allows the entire frequency range to radiate from one point in space and thereby enabling a “convincing sound field.”

Also unique are the bass drivers, which feature “force canceling.” The drivers are designed to prevent unwanted excursions that can create secondary radiation, which can cause distortion. Yet the drivers still produce great force, so much so that KEFF glues the rear magnet assemblies directly to each other.
But why introduce just a concept? Well, the company is following the idea in other technology industries that high-concept ideas create real world technologies for lower-concept products. In the company’s own words, “much like how car manufacturers launch their concept vehicles every year to taut their new technological advances, the research/technology used in this project will surely trickle down to the rest of the KEF lineup.”
Still, we think it would be cool to see these speakers in action.
